The Best 3-Day San Diego Family Weekend Itinerary
Balboa Park – A Part of History in Downtown
Balboa Park is a must-see destination in San Diego, offering a mix of historical charm and modern attractions. Spanning 1,200 acres, this urban park is home to gardens, museums, and cultural institutions, making it an ideal spot for a family day out. One of the highlights is the Balboa Park Carousel. This antique carousel, built in 1910, features hand-carved wooden animals and provides a nostalgic ride for both kids and adults. The carousel’s vintage charm is a delightful throwback to simpler times and a must-visit for families with young children.

A short walk from the carousel is the Spanish Village Art Center. Here, you’ll find a vibrant community of artists working in charming Spanish-style cottages. The colorful courtyard and studios offer a perfect setting for art lovers to explore various forms of creative expression. During our visit, our youngest, C., was in awe of the artists’ shops, spending time chatting with the creators and admiring their work. It’s a fantastic place to engage with local art and maybe even pick up a unique souvenir.
One of my personal favorites in Balboa Park is the Rose Garden. This three-acre garden boasts over 1,600 roses, with varieties blooming throughout the year. The garden’s tranquil atmosphere and beautiful array of flowers make it a perfect spot to relax and take in the scenery. There are plenty of benches where you can sit and enjoy the views, which was essential for us as we needed frequent rest breaks. I spent a lot of time photographing the roses, each more stunning than the last.
Visiting Balboa Park offers a blend of activities that cater to various interests and energy levels. From the historical charm of the carousel and the artistic inspiration of the Spanish Village Art Center to the serene beauty of the Rose Garden, Balboa Park truly has something for everyone.

San Diego Natural History Museum
The San Diego Natural History Museum, located in Balboa Park, is a treasure trove of exhibits that captivate visitors of all ages. Known affectionately as “The Nat,” this museum provides a deep dive into the natural world, with a special focus on the biodiversity of Southern California and Baja California.
One of the standout exhibits at The Nat is Fossil Mysteries. This exhibit takes you on a journey through millions of years, showcasing the prehistoric life that once roamed the region. The detailed displays of fossils, including dinosaurs and ancient sea creatures, are both educational and awe-inspiring. Our visit to Fossil Mysteries was a hit with the entire family, as it offered a fascinating glimpse into the Earth’s distant past.
The museum is highly accessible, making it an excellent choice for families with mobility challenges. Elevators and ramps are available throughout the building, ensuring that everyone can comfortably explore the exhibits. Manual wheelchairs are also available to borrow from Guest Services, which we found incredibly helpful.
In addition to its permanent exhibits, The Nat hosts rotating special exhibitions and an impressive giant-screen theater that shows nature-themed films. These features make each visit unique and engaging, regardless of how many times you’ve been before.
For families with dietary restrictions, the museum’s on-site café offers a limited selection of gluten-free and vegan options, but it’s always a good idea to bring your own snacks to ensure everyone has something they can enjoy.
Our experience at the San Diego Natural History Museum was both enriching and accommodating, making it a must-visit on your Balboa Park itinerary.
Visit the Famous San Diego Zoo
The San Diego Zoo is one of the world’s most renowned zoological parks, offering a remarkable experience for families and animal lovers. Spread over 100 acres in Balboa Park, the zoo is home to over 3,500 animals representing more than 650 species. With its lush, naturalistic habitats and diverse wildlife, the San Diego Zoo provides an unforgettable day of exploration and education.
As you enter the zoo, you’ll be greeted by an array of exhibits showcasing animals from all corners of the globe. From the iconic giant pandas and majestic elephants to the fascinating reptiles and colorful birds, there is something to captivate every visitor. The zoo is thoughtfully designed to mimic the animals’ natural environments, offering an immersive experience that highlights the importance of conservation and animal welfare.

Navigating such a large zoo can be challenging, especially for families with young children or individuals with mobility issues. Fortunately, the San Diego Zoo is highly accessible, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their visit. Manual wheelchairs and electric convenience vehicles (ECVs) are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis near the entrance. For those who prefer to bring their own mobility devices, the zoo is fully equipped to accommodate wheelchairs and ECVs throughout its grounds.
One of the best ways to explore the zoo without getting too fatigued is by taking advantage of the Guided Bus Tours. These tours provide a comprehensive overview of the zoo, allowing you to see many of the major exhibits from the comfort of a double-decker bus. It’s a great way to cover more ground and plan which areas you want to explore in more detail.
When it comes to managing food and drinks for the day, we found it best to bring our own supplies. The zoo allows visitors to bring personal food items in single-person containers. We packed a gallon of water, which we strapped to the back of the girls’ stroller, and safe snacks stored in the compartment under their seats. This not only catered to our dietary restrictions but also ensured we had plenty of hydration throughout the day. Although there are dining options within the zoo, the gluten-free and vegan selections can be limited, so having your own food can be a lifesaver.
Given San Diego’s sunny climate, it’s essential to protect yourself from the sun. Wearing hats is a must for everyone in the family. For those with sun sensitivity, light, breathable long-sleeve shirts are recommended. We also kept the stroller cover over our little ones to prevent sunburns, making sure they stayed cool and protected. Portable misting fans can be a great addition to your gear, helping you stay refreshed in the heat.
With thoughtful amenities and diverse exhibits, the San Diego Zoo remains a top destination for anyone visiting San Diego. By planning ahead and taking steps to ensure comfort and safety, you can enjoy a memorable day at this world-class zoo.
